itokim, aka tendo-based producer takuro ito, aligns with dj bone s subject detroit label with the subject japan: rhythm poems ep and his opening gambit certainly leaves a dent. -motechnique- has been a staple of bone s 3 deck attacks in recent months and it will have eyebrows raised and mouths open from the off. weighty but warm kicks start as they mean to go on, bursting with pace and vigour as thrusts and stabs pinprick the brooding chords. the laidback, easy-going connotations of the title to -roll up and shine- are very much the ethos and aesthetic of the production, as a playful, bubbling melody sets a warm and almost sugary tone from the off before being bolstered by a suave melange of full-bodied kick and dexterous percussion. itokim rounds off his first outing on subject detroit with -the mood device-, a to the point groover that melds elements of the previous productions to stunning effect. a genuine builder of a track with a straight and true trajectory, -the mood device- melds innumerable coatings of percussion and synth as stabs are layered and layered again, clotting and coagulating the composition in to one delightfully deep and multidimensional slice of formidable dancefloor composite.

with his debut album back to bedlam, elia vens presents the astonishing result of his musical rebirth. no doubt, he keeps the balance between underground techno and rhythmic house music with a dash of haunting melodies. the production time of one and a half years proofs his will to accurately establish a serious musical base and that he took his time to collaborate with several artists from divergent fields. the element of surprise runs like a golden thread through all tracks and eventually leaves behind the answer to the very question for the identity of elia vens.

release number eight on london house maven george fitzgeralds manmakemusic label, the laszlo dancehall ep, connects two of the uks most exciting young producers: leon vynehall and christian piers. the sample driven crunch of vynehalls earlier productions on manmakemusic can be heard loud and clear complementing the canny but irresistible percussive and vocal shimmies of piers. aside track gave up, championed by george fitzgerald on his recent bbc essential mix for radio one, sets the pace and aims straight at the dancefloor with its strange sonic palette, at once euphoric and gritty. on the flip we get aint no time on which vynehall and piers give us their interpretation of classic house. the final track, manley harrison, is the strangest and arguably most original of the bunch and leaves the listener in no doubt as to why there is such a buzz about these two producers at the moment.

the next vinyl-only release on candela rising is a 3 track ep from irish duo dara smith & ian mcdonnell, a.k.a lakker. all topped off with a remix of the title track by us born and birmingham based dj skirt. after a string of extremely successful releases on blueprint, killekill and an early 2013 release in the shape of a remix for stroboscopic artefacts, lakker are back and showing more range than ever before. coal bath is a real frankensteins monster of a track, a techno/garage hybrid with haunting vocals hiding through the middle and broken beats that hit hard. skirts remix takes coal bath and lays down some heavy demented bass, chops up the middle and grooves things up. all of which leaves a remix ready for the bunker or warehouse. on the flip, rsspstp is a heavy hitter. distorted bangs set the pace for this one, which evolves into a prime example of the attention to detail lakker are so famed for. machine music at its best. the final track on the ep, brood, is dark and dense, full of cold atmosphere, sub-low beats and distant, distorted drones. techno for the darkest floors ...

upon the first listen, the work of fernando unfolds directly on your brain and leaves a long lasting feeling of drama. fernando pulichino is one those lucky guys who can pick up any instrument and write songs without breaking a sweat. he first caught my attention with a remake of the bauhaus classic kick in the eye released on redux in 2008. he then backed up this great start with releases and remixes for labels like international feel, under the shade, internasjonal and nang. he also very busy touring as part of the 2020 soundsystem band and he is also in silver city with julian sanza.
we decided to put together a long player to highlight the talents of our man in buenos aires. the construction of *float* reveals an astonishing wealth of musical ideas, brazen touches of new wave and icy modern disco sounds are evident throughout. low slung basses are also a theme that runs right through *float* whether it is the opening song *a place* which has a monster electronic bottom end or *from out there* which sits firmly on the punk funk dinner table, bass lines are clearly important to fernando.

new years deal - behind the highway, near the industrial area, next to the airport, somewhere in the innercity, urban principles fall apart. that leaves the enclaves, mono functionalism and an urban ultra density that local governments are struggling to eradicate. both a cage and a cocoon, there is a space where development opportunities hit the wall. hybrid places that combines urban collapse and >the new culture<, endemic violence and solidarity, all of which is left to the communities to deal with without outside help. when the post-industrial economy becomes sporadic and nothing else takes shape, man is left at the mercy of his environment. techno appears and becomes a parallel between man and the city, as another faceless entity which unifies them. this unity is the result and techno is the process.

lp includes downloadcode the time has come. the funky nerd and knob-handler erdbeerschnitzel alias tim keiling is releasing his first physical album on mirau. the young producer, who has moved from his hometown of mittelfischbach to bonn, tapped into the lode of versatility early on, and has been extracting one surprise after another ever since.

kontra-musik releases another limited frak white label. on the a-side and the track wobbler frak leaves karlskrona for a short visit in omar-s detroit. the b-side drops some true styrka studio modular funk.

dope me / does caroline know? is a slightly clubbier affair-less sun ra and more soul capsule-but still possesses the air of strangeness that makes the duo so unique. each artist leaves his mark within the first few measure of dope me. the steady high-hats and flawless kick drum are straight out of dazes playbook, while the nervous piano and 3 chairs-style claps are unmistakably bruno. as for the slurred vocal pleading >dope me..dope me<, thats anyones guess. the track carries on for a solid nine minutes as half-melodies and quasi-hooks slide in and out of the mix. the b-side, does caroline know?, takes us deeper and darker. the drums are plodding, the mood is ominous, and a series of dreamlike flourishes add to an already eerie groove. like the a-side, its a surrealistic style of house that only these two could deliver. the artwork, as usual, is done by daze maxim.

the wealth of artists involved for bedrock 14 is truly amazing. this 2012 label compilation captures the essence of why electronic dance music is such an exciting prospect right now by showcasing amazing underground talent, both established and new.

after releases on hypercolour and its digital off shoot, tom demac now makes the step up to the glass table imprint with a far ranging three track ep that is arguably his finest to date. never one to fall into the usual tried and tested traps, demacs sound is as idiosyncratic as the man who makes it, drawing on myriad influences and getting the best out of his fine collection of studio of gear.
